DSL Security
DSL Technology
Digital Subscriber Line technology (DSL), or fast Internet access, is changing the way people do business and use the Internet. DSL provides an "always on" connection to the Internet -- there is no need to dial-up, no more busy signals and no dropped connections when trying to connect to your ISP. By the year 2004, it is estimated that more than 50% of all Internet access will be via broadband services like DSL.
Creative Data Concepts Limited DSL Security
With more than 250 million Internet users worldwide, the challenge of Internet security has become a reality of Internet life. Creative Data Concepts Limited recognizes the importance of this and has taken specific measures to address the security needs of End Users.
The DSL service provided by Creative Data Concepts Limited and New Edge Networks comes with either a DSL bridge (also called a modem) or a DSL router to carry information. A router is a complex device that connects data between an ISP's network and the End User's premises network. A bridge connects two networks seamlessly using the same network protocol. End Users that select SDSL services will receive a router. New Edge Networks ships all ADSL services with a bridge. The only Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) option for IDSL is a router. New Edge Networks provides the following CPE solutions:

Security Options When Choosing a Router
Firewall
Customers who choose routers have several security options. A Firewall is hardware and software that works to prevent unauthorized access to an organization's network files, protecting files from electronic snooping/hackers and computer viruses. Creative Data Concepts Limited and New Edge Networks uses the Efficient 5851 router, which is configured and shipped with the firewall enabled. One of the main features of the firewall is that the IP filtering for the firewall on each interface specifies exactly the types of traffic you want to allow or deny. The firewall also:
- Allows access to a web server on your LAN without exposing your mail server or other services running on the same machine.
- Keeps Microsoft Networking from being accessed from the Internet.
- Allows locally initiated connections to be replied to while blocking remotely initiated connections.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Virtual Private Networks provide all the functions and features of a private network without dedicated private lines between different sites of origin. The VPN software provided by Efficient Networks allows you to develop your own Private network over the public Internet. Data sent over the public Internet is susceptible to being viewed by other parties. The VPN software keeps the data traveling on your network safe while it is in transit from one machine to another. The only way to protect data is to encrypt that data while it is in transit. Data encryption is what Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is all about. The router takes care of the data encryption as it passes through to the Internet.
Although VPN is not standard on CPE provided by Creative Data Concepts and New Edge Networks, it is available from the Efficient Networks. The cost for this software upgrade is $299.00. We will configure and manage your VPN solution.

Conclusion
As DSL technologies become the norm rather than the exception, it stands to reason that most equipment manufacturers will incorporate increased security features into their hardware. Most routers and bridges need additional features to mitigate the risk factor associated with a constant connection. Firewalls and other incorporated technologies, such as those provided by Creative Data Concepts Limited, provide the best protection for DSL End Users.
